LABEL-ization invites park-goers to collaborate with park residents (non-human beings and objects) to participate in an active process of LABELING. Using recycled and found materials such as cardboard, we provide instructions and invite participants to write labels for anything they notice in the parks—a stone, a bench, a patch of grass, a sound. Each object may accumulate multiple labels over time, allowing different, even conflicting interpretations to coexist.
LABEL-ization aims to rethink the authority of the museum and its systems of selection and narrative construction through the open and collective act of labeling. What can be included in a museum? Who decides, and what do they represent? This project reframes labeling as a form of co-creation. We want to imagine an alternative museum epistemology that is participative, multivocal, and collective
LABEL-ization received a $5,000 grant from RPGA Studio’s BeTheMuseum artist open call. BeTheMuseum is a framework and program created by Yvonne Shortt, in which the authority of the museum does not belong to an external curator, but to the people who actively use, care for, and create meaning within the space.
