DunDun is a handmade stool crafted by the displaced villagers of Dameng, central China, made from abandoned heat-insulation foam and recycled fabrics. In the summer of 2024, we collected 25 DunDuns from Dameng and brought them to New York in search of new homes, initiating the Rehoming DunDun project. Using “adoption” as a method of co-creation, the project seeks to share the stories of displacement from the Dameng community and reflect on the broader impacts of urbanization and the gentrifying forces of loss that happen in every corner of this world. Through the act of adoption, we believe that the social and the phenomenological experience bring people into collective attention and action.
